Licensure Requirements

The LPN program should be completed from a state-approved licensed practical nursing college. But, just graduating does not entitle one to practice in a professional environment. As nursing is a responsible profession and any negligence may result in harmful consequences, therefore, the state has made it mandatory to clear the NCLEX-PN test to get the license. Licensure restricts the entry of unqualified people into the profession and reduces the possibility of people being harmed by the incompetence of practitioners. Licensure by Examination

The candidates who have graduated from an approved LPN school in Nevada can get the licensure through examination. The candidate must fulfill the following conditions to be eligible to appear for the NCLEX-PN test.

• Request your school to submit an affidavit to the board.
• Send the official transcripts to the board.
• Request for an application packet containing application and fingerprinting card. The candidate can also download the application and send it along with the fee to the board. The board then sends the fingerprinting card, which should be submitted after getting the fingerprinting done.

• The applicant is expected to fill the fingerprint card and deposit it to the board with the application. If you have your fingerprints captured in Nevada, submit it via electronic transmission instead of a card.
• Along with the application, the candidate should submit a copy of the graduation as an evidence of completion of the nursing education program. The candidate should submit a copy of the LPN certificate or official transcript issued by the Board to the Registrar or the student. The document must contain the graduation date and nursing degree.
• Documentation, including jurisdiction and date of any previous license, held or denial.
• Complete all the information in the form like the name, signature, address, and social security number. Incomplete application will not be processed.

Out-of-Country

If the candidate has completed his education from a school that is outside the US and the principal language of the school is English, then it is not necessary to give a proof of proficiency in the language.
The countries where principal language is English are- Australia, New Zealand, Canada (except Quebec), the United Kingdom, Ireland, Tobago, Trinidad, South Africa, Ghana, Jamaica, Barbados or the United States Territory.

On the other hand, the nurses who have graduated from a school that does not have English as their primary language, have to clear an English proficiency test.
The candidates can appear for any of the following tests:

• TOEFL, the minimum score should be 84 (with 26 in spoken English)
• Pearson Test of English Academic, the minimum marks should be 55 (with 50 or above in each section)

The English proficiency skills result must be sent to the Nevada State Board of Nursing.

Following are the steps that need to be carried out by an out-of-country LPN.

• Out-of-country LPNs are required to deposit the documents that would prove the authenticity of their LPN diploma or certificate. This information can be found in CGFNS report. So, apply for CGFNS-CES. If the desired information is not there, the practical nurse should contact the authority in the country that issued the license.
• Next, apply for the English proficiency test.
• Submit the verification of licensure. The information required for verification should be in the CGFNS report. In case, the information is not contained in the report; the candidate should request the legalized authority in the country where the nursing education was completed to provide the documentation proving that you held a valid practical nursing license in that country.
• Fill the application for licensure and submit it along with the fingerprint report.
• Once the CGFNS-CES report and English language proficiency results are out and submitted to the board, apply for the NCLEX-PN test.

The candidate will not be issued Authorization to Test until the board receives CGFNS-CES Report, the results of English proficiency exam, and an evidence of licensure in the country from where you have completed nursing graduation.

Nevada Nursing License Renewal

The candidates who have held an active license in Nevada previously, which is now inactive or expired, do not have to go through the initial licensure process, instead; they have to renew the license. The renewal process should not be started more than 2 months before the date of expiration.

• S/he should have an evidence of nursing practice done in any state of the United States in the past five years. Any paid or volunteer work can be counted as nursing practice.
• If the aspirant has not practiced nursing in the past five years, s/he would be required to complete a board-approved refresher course in order to refresh the knowledge and skills.
• Next, the candidate should complete 30 continuing education hours in the renewal period. The renewal period is counted as the preceding two years from the date of renewal.
• The applicant should also complete a one-time bioterrorism course as defined in the NAC 632.343. The completion date should be on or after January 1, 2005, with a minimum of four hours of CEUs. The four hours should be included in the 30 hours of CEU requirement of LPN renewal.
• If it has been more than four years since you held an active LPN license, submission of fingerprint becomes mandatory.
• If you fulfill the above requirements, fill the renewal application with the essential details and submit it with a fee of $100 to the board.

License Reinstatement

A fee of $100 is charged for reinstating the license. The license can be reinstated by submitting a proof of participation in 30 hours of continuing education in the past two years.
